IND vs OMN, FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifier: India lose 2-1 to Oman after making lead
The Indian football team lost 2–1 to Oman in their first match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers. India took the lead over Oman in the 24th minute of the first half with the help of Sunil Chhetri's goal. This is the 72nd goal in Chhetri's 112th international match. India retained their lead till the 82nd minute of the match. But Al-Mandar of Oman scored a goal in India's account by scoring goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes. The Indian team will play against Qatar in their second match of the World Cup qualifiers on 10 September. In the match, India's goalkeeper Gurupreet Singh Sandhu made several great saves.

The Indian team could not bear the pressure of the last minute and had to face defeat. The Indian football team has not been able to win a single match against Oman so far. India and Oman last met each other in December 2018 against each other in Abu Dhabi, where the match was a goalless draw. The team has played 6 international matches since taking over as coach of Igor Steymak, a member of the Croatian team that reached the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup. The team's debut under Steamak has been nothing special. The team's performance in the Intercontinental Cup was poor after finishing third in the Kings Cup held in Thailand.
