Maharashtra Assembly Elections: 916 candidates with criminal backgrounds
Out of 1007 crores of candidates seeking fate in Maharashtra Assembly elections, 916 criminal cases have been registered. After analyzing the affidavits of the 3112 candidates on the field, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) found that 916 of them had criminal cases against them.
In the last state elections, a total of 2336 candidates were analyzed, which found that 978 reported their criminal cases.
About 600 (19%) candidates running for the election this time have serious criminal cases. In the 2014 elections, 537 (23%) candidates did not report serious cases.

The ADR has also analyzed criminal cases of candidates on a party basis. 96 (59%) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 83 (57%) of the Congress 147, 75 (61%) of the Shiv Sena, 73 of 116 (61%) of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). 63 (52%), 52 (49%) of the Maharashtra Sena (MNS), 52 (21%) of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and 280 (21%) of the 1359 independent candidates listed in their affidavit. Cases are provided.
59 BJP candidates (36 percent), 44 (30 percent) of Congress, 59 (48 percent) of the Shiv Sena, 40 (35 percent) of the Nationalist Congress Party, 34 (34 percent) of Maharashtra Nunarman Sena (MNS), 41 (17%) and 193 independent candidates have confessed to serious criminal cases.
According to the ADR, a total of 67 candidates are facing criminal cases against women while four have registered sexual assault (rap) cases. Apart from this, there are 19 cases of murder on 19 candidates. There are 27 candidates contesting elections who have been sentenced under different cases but they are trying their luck in politics.
